SAPNA would like to congratulate Dr Judith Berry on her prestigious award of being the 2010 Judith Cornell Orator. Judith is a life member of SAPNA as is a dedicated Perioperative Nurse. Judith will present at the Oration during the 2010 ACORN conference in Perth. Did you know there is currently no guidelines for the clinical management of patients with multi resistant organisms(MRO) in the perioperative environment? The Department of Health through Linda Henderson has set up a working party to provide guidelines for all health units. The first draft paper will be discussed at the second meeting on Tuesday 23rd February.

Did you know that current accreditation in Advanced Life Support (ALS) is very likely to become mandatory within the next few years?
For the first time, the new 2008 ACORN Standards for Recovery and Anaesthesia Nurses recommends ALS competency as standards for senior nurses working in these areas. While hospitals including The Memorial have required this level of competency from their staff for many years, most hospitals will required assistance to promote their nurses to this level of competency.
In anticipation of these events, the SAPNA committee is currently investigating the development and facilitation of an ALS training program specifically designed for Perioperative Nurses.

Better glucose control in children with type 1 diabetes A study by researchers at the Joslin Diabetes Center has shown that adherence to prescribed dietary recommendations is associated with better glucose control in children with type 1 diabetes. “In recent years, diabetes management has been focused around new medications and technologies,” said Lori Laffel, M.D., senior author of the paper, which is published in the July issue of Diabetes Care. “In this study, we were encouraged to identify the unique importance of diet on blood sugar control in children and teens with type 1 diabetes.
